Are You B12 Deficient?
Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin that is found in foods such as eggs, meat, fish and dairy products. B12 is bound to protein in food and is cleaved from protein by the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It combines with intrinsic factor to be absorbed in the last part of small intestine.
Vitamin B12 is important in forming red blood cells, DNA and RNA synthesis, facilitating metabolic conversion of protein and fats, producing myelin sheath (the coating of nerves), and maintaining normal homocysteine levels.
Symptoms of low B12 include:
• Weakness, Fatigue
• Shortness of Breath
• Pale Skin
• Tingling in Hands and Feet
• Low Blood Pressure
• Low Mood
• Vision Loss
• Muscle Aches & Joint Pain
Risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency increases in vegetarian, vegan, and elderly populations. Inadequate absorption can happen in people with celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, bacterial overgrowth, pernicious anemia or stomach-acid suppressing medications, since you require sufficient stomach acid to ensure vitamin B12 absorption into the body.
Intramuscular B12 injections are an effective way to increase vitamin B12 levels quickly as it reaches directly into the bloodstream, bypassing any need for digestion.
