Custom Orthotic Therapy

Custom Orthotics

Your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. When a small problem develops in your foot, subtle changes in the way you walk create a chain reaction of changes to your posture and the mechanics of how you walk. These changes place stress on the joints higher up in your body. This may lead to foot pain, knee pain, hip pain or back pain.

What Is A Custom Orthotic?

Custom orthotics are devices that are worn in your shoes to correct how your feet move, and help them work more efficiently. The way custom orthotics work for your feet is similar to how your glasses work for your eyes. They reduce stress and strain on the joints and muscles. Custom orthotics reduces symptoms such as foot pain, bunions or hammer toes, arch or heel pain, leg or knee pain or hip and low back pain. Like your glasses, custom orthotics are prescribed to fix the cause of your foot pain. Your feet are not like other people’s feet, so your custom orthotics will be different, too. Also like your glasses, orthotics only work for you when you are wearing them.

You can choose from:

  • Custom Orthotic Inserts
  • Shoes with Custom Inserts
  • Boots with Custom Inserts
  • Work Boots with Custom Inserts
  • Sandals with Custom Footbeds

Who Needs Custom Orthotics?

Your health care practitioner can prescribe custom orthotics to help correct your specific foot and body imbalance. You can help your health care practitioner by discussing any nagging foot, leg, or back problems, and even by simply asking if your feet could be part of the problem.

A Chiropractor Is A Great Choice For Making You A Custom Orthotic

Dr. Vlaskamp has been making Custom Orthotics for over 12 years. Chiropractors are a great choice to diagnose and fit your Custom Orthotics because they are trained to see your body as a whole entity. The source of dis-ease and dys-function in your body might not originate where the pain is and a chiropractor's training is geared to determining the root of your pain.

Dr. Vlaskamp will examine your foot for proper mobility and position. This may also include examining the muscles of the lower leg.

Next, he will look at how you stand to see if you pronate (roll toward the arch of the foot) or supinate.

Finally, he will perform a computerized gait analysis to see exactly what your foot does while you walk.

A cast of the foot will be taken in a soft foam to send to the laboratory that manufactures the orthotic, creating a perfect match of your foot.

Technology To Assist Design of Custom Orthotics

Your foot is in contact with the ground for less than one second. Imagine trying to determine normal or abnormal foot function with the naked eye in a quarter of a second? This is too difficult to do accurately for even the most experienced practitioner. The GaitScan system records your gait as you walk across the pressure plate. This enables us to have a clear picture of your foot mechanics and determine whether you would benefit from wearing custom made foot orthotics.

The TOG GaitScan™ System is a revolutionary diagnostic tool for assessing your biomechanics. GaitScan™ has an industry high 4096 sensors and scans at an industry high 300Hz (scans per second). These measurements provide a sophisticated explanation of foot mechanics and assists with choosing custom orthotic and/or shoe solutions.
