Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction is the technical term for jaw pain. The temporomandibular joint (T.M.J.) becomes painful if there is a chronic strain put on it. This may come from chewing a lot (like chewing gum) or from clenching or grinding. Often the clenching and grinding happens in our sleep, but it can happen during the day also, especially if times are stressful. Laser Therapy is one way of treating the join by reducing inflammation around the joint. It also helps to release chronically tight muscles. Laser Therapy is used in conjunction with Massage Therapy for T.M.J.D.
Nerve Pain comes from different sources. It might be pressure from a herniated disc. It might be irritation from a muscle or joint. It might even be a virus, as in the case of Bell’s Palsy. In all of these cases, Laser Therapy helps to reduce nerve irritation and inflammation and helps the nerve return to its proper way of functioning.
The pain that comes with Arthritis is due to inflammation caused when one rough surface rubs on another rough surface. This is something that can’t be avoided, but with Laser Therapy, inflammation can be controlled. Laser Therapy stimulates the immune system to help it clear inflammation.
Bell’s Palsy is a condition of a nerve in the face. It is thought to be caused by inflammation of the nerve as it passes through narrow bony parts of the skull. This causes one side of the face (eye, mouth and cheek) to droop and not be controllable. Laser therapy is beneficial in this case because it helps to reduce the inflammation and stimulates the nerve cells to send signals along the nerve better.
