Get Your Feet Ready For Spring

Happy Spring!

We are still in lockdown but thankfully the good weather is on the way and we can finally get outside! There are many ways that we can help put a SPRING back in your step. Here is a brief summary of what we have to offer your feet:

Custom Orthotic Inserts

Custom Devices for Your Feet

Custom orthotics have a history of success in the reduction of foot pain. Studies show that patient satisfaction with their orthotics is high; high enough that people who have worn orthotics continue to wear them after the pain subsides. Research shows that foot pain caused by foot pronation (rolling in), foot supination (rolling out), plantar fasciitis and hammer toes all respond well to the use of orthotics. The benefits of orthotics seem to be a combination of reduced pressure on the soles of the feet, improved motion of the feet and ankles as well as better muscle activation in the feet and legs.

Chiropractic

Adjusting For Relief

Dr. Doug uses soft tissue techniques on your muscles and connective tissues and can adjust your ankles, arches and toes. Improper gait (foot mechanics) can cause trouble further up your body in your ankles, knees, hips or back. There are even exercises you can do at home to improve the strength of the supportive muscles of your feet. Even when using orthotics, some people need manipulation of the bones of the feet to allow the orthotic do its job. Let Dr. Doug know that your feet are bothering you and he might suggest either hands-on treatment or laser therapy.

Massage Therapy

Rub Away the Pain

Your feet might be aching for several reasons: excessive standing, excessive walking, plantar fasciitis, foot cramps, wearing high heels or poorly fitting footwear, sport related injuries or the loose ligaments and weight gain that occur during pregnancy. Our skilled RMTs can work specifically on the muscles in your feet, calves and hamstrings. Let your therapist know that you want to add that into your treatment or, if you only want to have therapy on your feet, book a 30 minute massage.

Acupuncture

Needle Your Way to Happy Feet

Acupuncture can be very effective at decreasing pain and inflammation throughout the body, and that includes the feet! Whether you are dealing with gout, arthritis, or plantar fasciitis, a few skillfully placed needles may help you get back on your feet. Acupuncture works by helping the body produce its own pain-reducing signals called enkephalins. It also helps increase circulation and bring more blood flow to the area, which speeds up the healing process. In Traditional Chinese Medicine terminology, we often diagnose an acute flare-up of gout as “damp heat”. “Dampness” refers to symptoms of swelling, and “heat” refers to symptoms of inflammation such as redness, pain, heat, and swelling. Acupuncture points are used not only on your feet, but throughout the body as well – we use a whole body approach to treatment.

In one 2016 meta-analysis which looked at 28 randomized controlled trials which included 2237 patients with gouty arthritis, acupuncture treatment was superior to standard medication to relieve the symptoms of gouty arthritis. Frequent treatments several times a week are usually needed initially, but I have definitely seen patients get some short-term pain relief starting immediately after their first treatment!

If your foot pain is holding you back, consider giving acupuncture a try. Because of acupuncture’s calming effect on the nervous system, most patients find that the treatment is very relaxing. You may be surprised with how powerful a few needles can be! Book an Acupuncture appointment with Dr. Tamar.
