Pregnancy Doesn’t Have To Be A Pain!
By Dr. Douglas Vlaskamp, DC, Chiropractor
It happens often. A woman comes to the office with intense pain in her low back, sometimes into the leg, all due to a pregnancy. The increasing size of the baby is pulling forward on her spine, causing muscle tightness, spinal pain and sometimes nerve pinching. Even though the baby will continue to grow, she doesn’t have to put up with the pain for the rest of the pregnancy.
Treatment on the muscles of the back help reduce the strain caused by the new posture. This can be Massage Therapy or Chiropractic. On the Chiropractic side, adjusting joints that aren’t moving helps to reduce the deeper pain of the spine and helps to take pressures off spinal nerves. Besides reducing pain, this proves helpful in circumstances such as allowing the baby room to turn head down before delivery, and also helps all joints to move as they should which eases the birth process. Every pregnancy is different, even with the same woman. Most times, pain is reduced and a maintenance schedule is enough to get through the pregnancy.
Sometimes, as the pregnancy progresses, the frequency of treatments increases, too. This is decided primarily by how the pregnancy is affecting the spine. We have lots of experience treating pregnancy pain and regularly receive referrals from Midwives in Peel.
